Treating bites and stings

In addition to the host of commercial products available to treat bites and stings, many simple household remedies work well.

Rub a bar of wet soap over the bite, or apply toothpaste to it.

Apply a paste of water and meat tenderizer. A paste of baking soda and water applied immediately to a bee or wasp sting also reduces pain and swelling.

Cut off the tip of an aloe plant and apply the sap to the bite, or buy aloe gel at a health food store. It is also good for sunburn.

Crisscross the swollen area around a mosquito bite with a fingernail (on the theory that one pain will cancel another), and apply some ever-available spit.

Let an itchy child soak in a tub of water to which baking soda or laundry starch has been added. Or go to the beach, just for the sake of getting into the soothing water!

Neutralize the sting of fire ants by applying white vinegar to the bites.
