Watch your salt

Our body needs about 2300 mg of sodium a day. This is about one teaspoon of salt. The body receives sodium not only from salt but also from processed foods such as tomato sauce, cured meats, processed cheese, salad dressings and sausages. It is good to avoid salty foods for a healthy heart.

• Instead of going for extra salt, try some pepper when you eat out.

• Add fruits, vegetables and whole-grain high-fiber foods in your daily diet.

• Add lemon juice to fish and vegetables instead of salt.

• Try having your dish without salt to control blood pressure.
